Following the YouTube, Facebook owned social platform Instagram is soon to reveal the amount of time you spend on criticizing the celebrities or sharing cute pet images on this site by adding a special feature to their android version.
A code hidden inside Instagram’s Android app has a “Usage Insights” feature that detects the “time spent” of the users, Techcrunch reported earlier. Their report was originated from a a computer science student at the University of Massachusetts,Jane Manchun Wong, who discovered the code labeled “slideout_menu_time_spent” inside the Android application.
Wong tweeted about her discovery:
“Instagram is testing ‘Usage Insights’ to show the amount of time users have spent on the app. Be self aware or be prepared to be ashamed for Instagram addiction.”
Later on, Instagram confirmed this information by a form of Tweets from the CEO Kevin Systrom. The CEO said, “It’s true . . . We’re building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram – any time should be positive and intentional . . . Understanding how time online impacts people is important, and it’s the responsibility of all companies to be honest about this. We want to be part of the solution. I take that responsibility seriously.”
It is not clear yet whether it will show the total time spent on Instagram overall or the time spent based on a day, week or month. Having said that, the feature will let the users understand the exact measurement of time they spent endlessly scrolling on the platform .This is also going to help the company for better analysis of the usage pattern to provide an alternative experience in the future.
The giant social platform did not say anything yet about the time the new feature will officially be launched.
According to the report of TechCrunch, Instagram is also including a new commenting interface with a series of quick-add emojis and an @ button for tagging friends.
